We last visited Hawk and Horse Vineyards as part of my ongoing series of discovery of some of the great wines of California at the end of August. Today, we’ll enjoy another red wine from the same vintage: 2017 Petite Sirah produced & bottled by Hawk and Horse Vineyards.
This wine is 100% petite sirah grown on one single acre of the winery’s 18-acre estate mountain vineyard at 2,200 feet elevation in rocky red volcanic soil. The vineyard is CCOF Organic and Demeter Biodynamic certified. Following fermentation, the wine was aged in French oak barrels (40% new). It comes in at 14.1% ABV.
The wine showed a dark garnet color. Black cherry, raspberry, cassis, vanilla, plum and oak all arrived on the nose. Black cherry, raspberry preserves, plum, vanilla, blackberry and oak followed on the palate where the black cherry notes stole the show. The wine was full-bodied and exhibited great length along with soft tannins. This elegant wine would pair very well with a hearty lamb stew.
This wine can be purchased for $65 directly from the winery’s website.
